Day 2: Corvin Castle – Turda Salt Mine – Cristian Fortified Church with Organic Smoked Bacon Tasting and Wine Tasting
Next, you’ll visit Turda Salt Mine, one of Romania’s most popular underground tourist attractions. This former salt mine, excavated by hand, has a fascinating history dating back to 1075. Some of the main attractions of the Turda Salt Mine are the Franz Josef Gallery, Josef Mine, Crivac Room, Rudolf Mine, and the Terezia Mine. The Terezia Mine is by far the most beautiful part of Turda, with an impressive hall of 90 meters high and 87 meters in diameter, where you will see a “cascade of salt”, an underground salt lake on which you can take a boat ride, as well as various stalactites and other salt formations.
After exploring the underground wonders of Turda Salt Mine, you’ll head to Cristian Fortified Church, which dates back to 1495 and stands on the site of a 13th century Roman basilica. This Gothic-style Evangelical Church is surrounded by two rows of walls guarded by five towers, all erected in the 16th century.
To complete the day, you’ll have the opportunity to taste some delicious local treats. At Cristian Fortified Church, you’ll taste organic smoked bacon, a specialty of the region. And at a local winery, you’ll have the opportunity to taste some of Romania’s best wines.
